Short Brothers Aircraft - The Short C-23 Sherpa is a small military transport aircraft built by Short Brothers. It is designed to operate on unpaved runways and perform short takeoffs and landings (STOL).
It has a large square body with full-width rear cargo doors/lamps. The C-23A and C-23B are variants of the Short 330, and the C-23B+ is a variant of the Short 360.
Short Brothers Aircraft
The Short 330 was developed by Belfast's Short Brothers from the former Short SC.7 Skyvan STOL utility transport aircraft. The 330 has a longer wingspan and fuselage than the Skyvan and retains the Skyvan's square fuselage cross-section, allowing it to carry up to 30 passengers while retaining excellent short-range characteristics. 330-tered commercial service in 1976.

In March 1983, the US Air Force first ordered 18 aircraft. The aircraft was assigned to the Military Transport Command (MAC) for its European Distribution System Aircraft (EDSA) role, transporting cargo and personnel between the United States Air Force. at European (USAFE) airbases.
In the US Army, the Short 330 is designated the C-23A Sherpa. The C-23B Sherpa is similar to the C-23A but has cabin windows.

The C-23B+ Short 360 derivative was created by replacing the aftermarket Short 360's rear fuselage with the Short Sherpa's dual rear loading ramps.
The C-23 was manufactured at the Short Brothers facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland for the US Department of Defense.
It is based at the Zweibrück Air Base. It continued to serve as an EDSA until November 1990, with power being reduced after the Cold War.
All Sherpas returned to the United States. Three aircraft were transferred to the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB, eight were transferred to the US Army, and seven were transferred to the United States. Forest Service. The test pilot school's aircraft were decommissioned in 1997.

Eight former USAF aircraft were used on test missions by various units. Two were redesignated JC-23As.
The Army has purchased four civilian Short 330 aircraft to replace the DHC C-7 Caribou used to support the Kwajalein Missile Range. They were not given the C-23 designation and were withdrawn in 1992.
In 1988, the Army ordered a newly built Short 330, designated the C-23B, to replace the DHC C-7 Caribou used by the United States. Army National Guard Aviation and Repair Activities Depot. A further six were ordered in 1990.
The production line was discontinued in 1990 when the Army wanted 20 more C-23s. A used Short 360 aircraft was purchased instead. These were designated C-23B+ and were modified from the original single tail to twin tails and loading ramps from another C-23B.

During the Iraq War (2003-2011), the C-23 met the Army's global cargo and personnel transport needs. It provided an economical alternative for transporting around 20 people or 3 cargo pallets where speed was not critical.
As part of the U.S. Army's Constant Hawk intelligence program, five Short 360s were converted for use in Iraq and were flown from the battlefield between 2006 and 2011. Two more modified aircraft collided in the air before being delivered to Iraq. No military designation was given to the Constant Hawk aircraft.
By November 2008, a total of 43 C-23s were in service with the US Army (all US C-27s were transferred to the US Coast Guard in 2012 due to budget shortfalls).
As part of the Fiscal Year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act, eight C-23s may be transferred to Alaska to operate on short rural airstrips for search and rescue and heavy transport missions.

An Alaska National Guard C-23 waits on an unexplored frozen airstrip in the Alaskan town of Anaktubuk Pass to deliver medical supplies.

On March 3, 2001, a C-23B Sherpa with the 171st Air Regiment, Florida Army National Guard, transported 18 Virginia National Guard construction workers from Hurlburt Field, Florida, to Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia. The pilot left the flight deck to use the aft toilet. His weight on the tail cone shifted gravity enough to make the aircraft unstable as patches of severe turbulence were offset. In response to the violent g-force shift, the crew lost consciousness and the plane crashed mid-flight near Unadilla, Georgia, killing all 21 people on board.
Subsequent calculations showed that the aircraft was loaded outside of its operating range at the start of the flight.

The Short 360 aircraft were purchased as used aircraft from the US Army and refurbished by West Virginia Air Cter (WVAC) to replace the Short 360's aft fuselage and feature the Short Sherpa's single hi-fins, twin tails and rear loading ramps.

Brothers from Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is mainly used for short distance transportation and skydiving.
In 1958 F.G. Miles Ltd (the successor company of Miles Aircraft) enlisted assistance to produce a development of the H.D.M.106 Caravan design with a high aspect ratio wing similar to the Hurel-Dubois HD.31. Short obtained the design and data gathered from testing of the Miles Aerovan-based H.D.M.105 prototype. After evaluating the Miles offer, Short Caravan declined.
They developed their own design for a metal utility aircraft called the Short SC.7 Skyvan. The Skyvan is a twin-engine, all-metal high-wing monoplane with a high aspect ratio bracing wing and a cantilevered square section with twin fins and rudder.
Its large tailgate for loading and unloading cargo made it popular with freight forwarders compared to other small aircraft. The fuselage resembles a railroad box shape for simplicity and efficiency.

The second prototype (the first Series 2 Skyvan) was initially powered by the 666 shp (497 kW) Turbomeca Astazou X turboprop engine, but the first production version was powered by the 690 shp (510 kW) Turbomeca Astazou XII turboprop engine. In 1967, Astazou XII was found to have temperature limitations at high altitudes.
Accordingly, in 1968 production switched to Skyvan Series 3 aircraft, replacing the Astazou engines with Garrett AiResearch TPE331 715 shp (533 kW) turboprop engines. A total of 149 Skyvans (including 2 prototypes)

Produced before production ended in 1986. The US Air Force operated Sherpa Skyvans in Europe for transporting spare parts and cargo. The larger Sherpa was developed from previous models.
Skyvans have been operated extensively in both military and civilian operations, and were still in service with a number of civilian operators in 2009 and served military service in Guyana and Oman.
Skyvans were used during the infamous death flight in 1977 in the midst of Argentina's Dirty War. About 4,400 prisoners died on the Río de la Plata.
Two Argtin Navy string Skyvans later took part in the Falklands War in 1982. Both aircraft moved to Port Stanley in April 1982. One aircraft was damaged by Royal Navy gunfire over Stanley Racecourse and never flew again. It was finally destroyed by a shell during a British bombardment on 13 December. In June 1982 the second aircraft was used off Pebble Island where it got stuck in soft ground and was destroyed by British raiders on 15 May 1982.

Skyvans continue to be used in limited numbers for aerial photography and skydiving. In 1970, Questor Surveys of Toronto, Canada, converted the first of two Skyvan 3s for aerial geological survey work. Collier Mosquito Control District uses Skyvans for aerial spraying.
